Food Initiative

The Greenbrier Valley Local Foods Initiative was started in 2010 as an initiative of the Greenbrier Economic Development Corporation. The GVEDC is a regional economic development organization created by the state of West Virginia to assist communities in Pocahontas, Greenbrier, and Monroe Counties; the Greenbrier Valley. The GVEDC assumed “local foods systems development” as a main program focus in 2011.

The purpose of the Greenbrier Valley Local Foods Initiative is to support local projects and organizations so as to increase economic return to the farmers of Pocahontas, Greenbrier, and Monroe Counties, WV.

The Greenbrier Valley Local Foods Initiative works with farmers, markets, restaurants, distributors, schools, consumers, and food pantries to increase accessibility, availability, and affordability of fresh, healthy regional foods. Working with partner organizations such as WVU Extension and a slew of non-profits, community organizations, and individuals, we are hosting workshops, bringing in nationally recognized food experts, expanding markets, developing educational programs for students, planting community gardens, participating in local and statewide roundtable discussions, and connecting people with information through internet and new technologies.

We give individualized support to a variety of local organizations and groups who are spearheading their own community-driven food projects. We also keep track of the broader food scene in our region and nationally and seek out opportunities that might benefit our region. We are developing the online directory of regional food products and announcements at to connect consumers directly to farmers. We also use an online mailing list and social networking to distribute notifications and resources as widely as possible.
